The Tobacco’s that were made in France are probably the most iconic of all the guises there have been of the model. With its simplistic shape and lines, this was the quintessential ‘Leisure’ shoe.

Serving no actual sporting purpose, the Tobacco was strictly for fashion.

Constructed from soft brown suede, my favourite detail is the use of velour material for the stripes and heel tab. The gum rubber sole unit sits a perfect match colour wise with the upper, and has a subtle stitching to the toe area on the sole for added durability.

Released in the early 1970’s, the Tobacco has been a regular re-issue from adidas through the years and is still available today. The shape has lost a bit of its appeal through the years as the shoe seems to have become generally bulkier all around.

Although none were made in Germany, they were made pretty much everywhere else, including Morocco, Canada, Hungary and Slovenia to name but a few. They were available in various muted colourways and finishes, including a rather strange woven leather affair. But the original issues from France are the ones that are a collector’s favourite.
